Purposes:
To motivate Indiana children to learn more about the positive aspects of Hispanic history, Hispanic culture, and Hispanic personalities.
To support the development of writing skills among young students.
RAFAEL POMBO - Youth Essay Contest
Essay Theme:
The student may choose one theme and only one to write about
The influence of folk music from any Hispanic country on international musicians like, Shakira, Juanes, Vives, Juan Luis Guerra etc.
Futbol (Soccer): the phenomenon in HispanoAmerica. The influx of players in the international soccer leagues.
Prizes:
Elementary Level- 4th and 5th Grade:
1st- $150
2nd- $100
3rd- $50
Middle School Level:
1st- $150
2nd- $100
3rd- $50
High school Level:
1st- $150
2nd- $100
3rd- $50
Language:
Essays can be written in English or Spanish.
Student Limit: 25 students per school
Due Date: The student can send his/her essay by mail or e-mail before March 31st, 2009. It has to be postmarked by March 31st, 2009.
Judging Criteria for the Essays:
81/2” x 11” plain white. Typing paper
Black ink
1” margins on top, bottom and both sides
Total of pages: Elementary 1 complete page, Middle School 2 pages, High School 3 pages.
Essays may be typed or handwritten. If essay is handwritten, please use blue or black ink and print or write very legibly.
Cover pages with name, sex, school, school address (include city and zip code) and phone number, and name of supervising teacher.
Each additional page is to have the name of student and page number in top right corner.
All pages are to be stapled together.
If the student wants to send the essay by e-mail, the essay needs to be written double space and with a 12 letter font.

Essay must be postmarked on, or before March 31st on either case, mail or e-mail.
Essays will be reviewed and ranked according to the quality of the following:
Correct use of grammar and punctuation – 15 points
Spelling – 15 points
Understanding of the topic – 20 points
Neatness and overall appearance of the essay – 15 points
Originality and creativity – 25 points
SADCO is responsible for judging all essays and select the winners. Winners will be recognized with prizes provided by SADCO. Prizes will be awarded at the Indianapolis Central Public Library on April 24th, 2009

Tema del Ensayo:
El estudiante podré escoger sólamente uno de los dos temas a continuación:
La influencia de la música folclórica de cualquier país Hispano en los músicos internacionales como Shakira, Juanes Juan Luis Guerra, Carlos Vives, etc.
Fútbol (Soccer): el fenómeno en Hispano-América. La llegada de jugadores a las ligas internacionales.

Idioma:
Los ensayos pueden escribirse en Inglés o en Español.
Límite de estudiantes: 25 estudiantes por escuela
Fecha Límite: El estudiante podrá enviar su ensayo hasta Marzo 31, 2009. Si es enviado por correo postal, debe tener sello de correo de Marzo 31, 2009.
Criterios de Evaluación:
Papel plano 81/2” x 11” plain white.
Tinta negra
Márgenes: 1” arriba, abajo y en ambos lados
Total námero de páginas: Nivel elemental 1 página completa, Nivel Middle School 2 páginas, Nivel High School 3 páginas.
Los ensayos podrán ser escritos a mano o en computador. Si el ensayo es escrito a mano, favor utilizar tinta negra y que la escritura sea legible.
Portada con nombre, sexo, escuela, dirección y teléfono de la escuela, y nombre del profesor supervisor.
Cada página debe tener el nombre del estudiante y el número de la página en la esquina superior derecha.
Todas las páginas estarán unidos por gancho de cosedora.
Si el estudiante queire enviar el ensayo por e-mail, el ensayo debe escribirse en doble espacio y tamaño 12 de Font.

Escriba el nombre, sexo, escuela, dirección y teléfono de la escuela, y el nombre del profesor supervisor.
El ensayo debe tener como fecha de correo antes o hasta Febrero 28, 2009, tanto en envío por correo postal o correo electrónco.
Los ensayos se evaluarán de acuerdo a la calidad de los siguientes puntos:
Uso correcto de la gramática y la puntuación – 15 puntos
Ortografía – 15 puntos
Claridad del tema – 20 puntos
Presentación y apariencia del ensayo – 15 puntos
Originalidad y Creatividad – 25 puntos
SADCO es responsable de la evaluación de los ensayos y selección de los ganadores. Los ganadores serán premiados por SADCO y reconocidos en un evento a realizarse en la Indianapolis Central Public Library en Abril 24th, 2009
